In
the small town of Friedensdorf most of the homes and shops are brightly decorated.

spirit on the inside! In that shop, Hans the shoemaker works into the night,
purposely shut away from the holiday festivities around him. Alone in his shop,
with no family and few friends, Hans has never learned the true meaning of Christmas!
Then,
he is visited by an angel who tells him that he will receive the greatest gift
of all this Christmas - a gift from God! As the story unfolds, Hans learns the
joys of sharing and friendship, and finally is able to give someone else a gift
when he realizes that God has indeed given him a Gift!

Of Characters
Hans - Alone with
no family or friends except his pet crow, Aldo, Hans is bitter and cynical as
the town of Friedensdorf gets ready for Christmas. A shoemaker by trade (as
was his father), Hans spends most of his time repairing old shoes for the people
of the town. "Red Boots for Christmas" tells the story of how Hans' life was
changed after an angel visits him and explains the true meaning of Christmas
- God's gift of a Savior, Jesus! That Gift opens Hans' heart to the people around
him and he discovers the joy of giving away his own gift, the Red Boots!
The
Mayor - "The richest and most important man in all of Friedensdorf," according
to his only daughter, Adelaide. The Mayor truly wishes to be kind and generous
to the people of his town. When Adelaide sees the "Red Boots" and says she wants
them as HER Christmas present, though, the Mayor will do almost anything to
get them. In the end, however, he teaches Adelaide an important lesson about
Christmas and the giving of gifts - we give because God first gave His Son,
Jesus, to be our Savior.
Adelaide
- Only daughter of the Mayor of Friedensdorf, and quite spoiled. Her focus during
the weeks prior to Christmas is on finding just the perfect present...for herself!
Finally when her father explains the true meaning of Christmas and why we give
one another gifts, Adelaide is moved to give away the very gift she had chosen
for her own.
Frederick
- Christmas is a busy time for a mailman, but Frederick enjoys delivering the
holiday cards and packages. He tries to share that joy with Hans by telling
him about the gifts he is going to buy for his wife and daughter. But Hans doesn't
understand. Finally, on Christmas Eve, Hans invites Frederick in to share a
special dinner and we learn that Hans is beginning to understand the True Meaning
of Christmas!
Brigetta
- Selling newspapers doesn't bring Brigetta a lot of money, but it lets her
keep in touch with all of the people and all of the news in the little town
of Friedensdorf. The special Christmas edition of the newspaper is one of her
favorites and she brings a copy to Hans on Christmas Eve as a gift. She is very
sad that Hans doesn't understand Christmas and wishes that he had some family
to celebrate with. She is glad when Hans invites her to join him and some of
his friends for a special Christmas Eve dinner.
Elsa
- Little Elsa lives with her grandmother, Gretchen, and helps her collect and
sell bundles of twigs to the townpeople for firewood. They don't have much money
and can't even afford to buy new shoes to replace the worn out pair that Elsa
must wear even in the cold, snowy winter. Elsa's Grandmother has told her many
times about God's love for them and how rich that makes them even without money!
We all find out how that can be true when Hans becomes a new person because
of God's love for him
Gretchen
- Poor Gretchen earns her living by collecting sticks and twigs to sell as firewood.
She lives with her granddaugher, Elsa, and although they don't have much money
or many possessions, Gretchen has a strong faith in God and a deep love for
her Savior, Jesus. That keeps her from being bitter about her situation or angry
about the way some of the people of the town treat her and her grandchild.
